ORIGINAL CD REISSUE LINER NOTES:
There is
nothing digital on this album.
Except maybe the effects box.
This was the Pre-Sampling Era, I mean. It ‘twas, however, Paul’s
first release using four-track cassette technology!!! On his
previous 24 albums, everything was made to work using stereo
cassette decks and lots of copying from tape to tape! But
here, working sporadicalistically from 1985 all the way up to the
Lp’s 1990 release date, Paul accumulated gads of material and ended
up making the equivalent of a swell double-album, with lots of
potential hits and plenty of experimental pieces to boot, as you
shall experience for yourself upon listening to it.
Produced by
Paul Sidore.
Engineered by Paul Sidore.
Mixed by Paul Sidore, except when it wasn’t.
All instruments and singing by Paul Sidore,
with certain exceptions.
Fish & Cat logo by Paul Sidore.

All photographs by Jeanne Whalen,
I fully believe, and if I’m wrong please please forgive me Monique!

1985-1990 “throughout the world in a number of remote locations
which cannot be disclosed” although I shall now disclose them:
Paul’s apt. on Grant Street, Monique’s North Berkeley pad, Sylvia’s
Diner, Barrington Hall, possibly Dana’s front room,
and Fish & Cat Studios (Albany).
Originally
released in 1990.
Re-mastered, Re-packaged, and
Re-arranged for maximum sonic impact
by Chris Matthews, August 2003.
SELECTED TRACK NOTES:
•
"I
WISH I HAD A WALKIE-TALKIE"
(According to Paul's original cassette liner notes, this song is
"about
gardeners."
Monique sings with Paul, I think.)
•
"I AM A TREE"
("From Pakistani radio." Monique sings on this one for sure.)
•
"SMELTEN LAVA"
(Ken provides introductory nonsense.)
•
"BEGGIN BACK"
("Words by
Blind Lemon Jefferson."
Really?)
•
"LOOK BACK IN ANGER"
(Written by David Bowie.)
•
"HIMISTAL DREAM"
("Jeremy and
Jack Foley participate at Barrington."
Ah, but in what way?)
•
"GREG GRAY SCREAMS"
("At
Barrington."
Hall of Infamy. After several uninvited sing-alongs during Sheep
"wine dinner" concerts circa 1985-86, we finally invited the
resident schizophrenic student to "jam" wid us in his very own
style. Musicians on this occasion were likely me (Chris), Paul,
Jeremy, and Todd Robbins a.k.a. Snibbor Ddot, who also livd there.)
•
"CLAP THE RHYTHMS"
("Words by
Paul & Kenny and Kenny sings."
From 1985 at Grant Street. This one mixed by me (Chris) at Paul's
special request.)
•
"SAINT LOUIS"
(I play the drums on this smash hit single, which had been previewed
by the record-buying public on the Appollo Music Group "SAMPLES
1991" release.)
•
"PEELY SPIDER"
("From
Pakistani radio.")
•
"MAKES ME NERVOUS"
("By Paul
and Lenny. Lenny sings."
And plays guitar, no?)
•
"STELLAR POTATO"
(Based on an amazing improv groove cacophony by Paul on guitar with
me (Chris) on drums, taped at Sylvia's Diner in 1/1 time (each
measure consisting of one beat, playing a whole-note, sort-of). You
can hear my count-off of "One" as we begin.)
•
"GROOVE"
("Words by
Jeremy."
And don't he play bass on this?)
•
"MUSIC FOR THE
GOVERNMENT"
("Words by
Paul and Monique."
About a guy in love with his TV, literally. Amazingly, the live
Sheep band learned this wild song and we even performed it at
Barrington!)
