WISE FOOL

Title:  WISE FOOL

Artist:  DANNY HESSE

Recording dates: 1978-80

Originally released:  1980  (Zowie cassette #ZA9040)

Reissued on CD:  2002  (Zowie #197)

Produced by:  Danny Hesse

Recommended Tracks: VERIFICATION REQUIRED”, “MORE IMPRESSIONS” and “PLUG YOURSELF BACK IN” are major pieces of Musique Concréte, made up of a million bits of tape and starring everybody (the latter is artificially split here into 3 parts due to limitations of the mp3 format); Benny’s classic performance on “SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY” matches the obnoxious “band.”

Personnel:  Danny Hesse (all tracks)    Chris Matthews (tracks 1/2/6/7/10/12/13)    Ken Garkow (tracks 1/6)    Robb Perrone (tracks 6/10)    John Wilson (tracks 2/6/7/11/12/13)    Ben Daniels (tracks 2/7/11/13)    Rick & Randy Flicker (tracks 3/13)    Ken Miles (track 3)    Craig Peacock (tracks 3/6/12/13)    Vann Frazier & Ternel Martinez (track 3)    Cody Matthews & Marc Penning (track 6)    Joe Frazier (tracks 12/13)  • Steve Richards (tracks 11/13)    John Catania, Ron Valadolid, Coach Person & the boys of Eva D. Edwards Junior High School P.E. class (track 11)

CD Liner Notes:

Danny’s “Wise Fool” was a significant release for many reasons, such as these ones:

1. It was the first real "solo" record by either of us, outside of “The Amplifiers.”

2. Danny went wild with a new production style, seemingly influenced by Zappa’s "We're Only In It for the Money" album, but oh-so-uniquely "Danny," fully realizing the creative aspects of the cassette-deck pause-button (no multi-track home-recording or digital editing equipment existed in 1980, children!)

3. This was the first tape to include input from our ever-expanding group of pals, including Vann Frazier, Ternel Martinez, Craig Peacock, Benny Daniels, the twins Rick & Randy, Rob Perrone, Ken Garkow, and John Wilson (who turned us on to the Zappa Lp).

4. Danny took on a new solo label, "Zowie."

5. The opening song features my first-ever performance on a real drum kit!

Though his songs still sounded sorta Amps-like, Danny’s new compilization style made the album very mod and listenable. I tapped into his methods that summer as we completed our big opus “Panther’s Eye.”

Oh yeah, I think Danny once said he regretted including "I Wanna Screw Your Sister.” But I think honesty is the best policy, so this wondrous Cd reissue still has that quiet confession...

- Chris Matthews, February 2002
